The bar charts illustrate the Internet use by age for three different purposes in Australia in the years 2010 and 2011.

Overall, it is clear that emailing was the most common activity for residents, and the older the people were, the lower the percentages of those using social media were.

Between 2010 and 2011, there were roughly two-thirds of Australians sending and receiving emails, while more or less than half of the population accessed the Internet to pay their bills online and use social media.

Noticeably, online transactions and emailing shared the same pattern in the proportions of users when 80% of senior citizens (over 65) used the Internet to do so, with the 40-60 age bracket came a close second, whereas young adults (18-25) had the lowest figure, at 60%.

Almost all 18-25-year-olds in Australia used social networking platforms, and the percentages were around 15% and 30% lower among the next two age groups, 26-40 and 40-60, respectively. Only a quarter of those over 65 were social media users, compared to 40% of those aged 60-65.
