Topic 9: Music

  • How do you listen to music?
  • Are your musical tastes diverse?
  • Do you like to sing along to your favorite songs?
  • Are you learning an instrument at the moment?
  • Is live music popular in your country?
  • Do you like listening to live music?
  • When did you start listening to this genre of music?
  • Where did you hear it?
  • How do you feel when you listen to this song?

Topic 10: Tour

  • Where was the last place you visited on vacation?
  • Would you like to go back there again?
  • What type of tourist destination do you usually prefer?
  • Has a foreign guest ever stayed in your home?

Topic 11: Major

  • What is your major?
  • How do you like it?
  • How do you like your courses?
  • What major do you want to choose at university? Why? (if you don’t have a major)
  • Would you change it if you had the chance?
  • What major would you change it to?
  • Is it different from what you had in mind?

 

 

SPEAKING PART 2 + 3

1. Part 2: Describe a time you made a decision to wait for something.

You should say:

  • When it happened
  • Who you were with
  • What you were waiting for
  • And explain how you felt about the decision

Part 3:

  • Do people in your country like to take public transportation?
  • Why do some people like a slow-paced life?
  • Is being patient good for people? Why?
  • Are people less patient now than people in the past? Why?

2. Part 2: Describe a difficult decision you made that had a very good result.

You should say:

  • What the decision was
  • When you made your decision
  • How long it took to make the decision
  • And explain why it was difficult to make

Part 3:

  • What decisions do people usually make in their daily lives?
  • Which is easier, making a decision by yourself or making a decision after group
  • discussion?
  • Why are many young people unwilling to follow their parents’ advice?
  • Why would middle-aged people tend to second-guess their own decisions?

3. Part 2: Describe a person who inspired you to do something interesting.

You should say:

  • Who it was
  • When he/she inspired you
  • What she could do to inspire you
  • And explain why he/she inspired you

Part 3:

  • Which types of people become role models in your society?
  • Do you agree that famous people have more responsibilities than ordinary people?
  • What happens when young people lack good role models?
  • What standards of behavior should teachers set?

4. Part 2: Describe a time when someone asked you for your opinion.

You should say:

  • When she/he asked you
  • How she/he felt while listening to your opinion
  • And explain why she/he needed your opinion

Part 3:

  • Have you ever asked someone for his/her opinion?
  • Why do some people react impolitely when listening to someone’s story?

5. Part 2: Describe a time when you succeeded in doing something that was difficult.

You should say:

  • What it was
  • How you did/completed it
  • Why it was difficult
  • And how you felt about doing it

Part 3:

  • What kinds of jobs require people to be confident?
  • How important is being confident in work?
  • Which one do you think is more important? Confidence or knowledge?
  • How do you help children stay focused?

6. Part 2: Describe a place you have visited that you would recommend as a good place to live.

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • What it is like
  • What it is used for
  • And explain why you remember it well

Part 3:

  • Is color important for clothing?
  • Should course books be colorful?

7. Part 2: Describe an impressive English lesson you had and enjoyed.

You should say:

  • What it was about
  • When you had it
  • What the teacher did
  • And why you enjoyed the lesson

Part 3:

  • Why do people learn foreign languages?
  • What makes a good foreign language teacher?
  • Do you think grammar is important when learning foreign languages?
  • Is it interesting to be a foreign language teacher? Why?

8. Part 2: Describe an occasion when somebody said something positive about some work that

you did.

You should say:

  • Who it was
  • What work it was
  • When she/he told you that
  • And explain how you felt when hearing it

Part 3:

  • Will you be affected when hearing a number of negative stories?
  • How will you react when someone pays you a compliment?
  • Why is negative feedback as important as positive feedback at work?

9. Part 2: Describe a time when you forgot/missed an appointment.

You should say:

  • When it was
  • Who you made it with
  • Why you missed it
  • And how you felt about it

Part 3:

  • Is it important to have a daily plan?
  • What kind of things do people need to plan carefully?
  • Is there anything that cannot be planned?
  • Do you think it is important to have a work life balance?

10. Part 2: Describe a time when you received money as a gift (birthday, wedding).

You should say:

  • How did you get that money
  • Who gave it to you
  • When you received it
  • And explain why it was the best gift/ present you have ever received.

Part 3:

  • Is it important to teach children how to manage their pocket money?
  • What do you think of the saying love of money is the root of all evil?
  • Is it important for children to have the right attitude towards money?
  • In your country, do parents give children money for doing the housework?
  • What kinds of occasions that require people to send money as gifts?

11. Part 2: Describe a person you know who loves to grow plants (e.g.

vegetables/fruits/flowers etc.)

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • What he/she grows
  • Where he/she grows them
  • And explain why he/she enjoys growing plants

Part 3:

  • What do you think of the job of a farmer?
  • Are there many people growing their own vegetables now?
  • Do you think it’s good to let kids learn how to plant?
  • What are the differences between traditional and modern agriculture?

12. Part 2: Describe a person you know who is from a different cultural background.

You should say:

  • Who he/she is
  • Where he/she is from
  • How you knew him/her
  • And explain how you feel about him/her

Part 3:

  • Where and how can we get to know people of different cultures better?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of cultural diversity?
  • How can traditional culture and other cultures coexist?

13. Part 2: Describe a place in the countryside that you visited.

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • When you visited this place
  • What you did there
  • And explain how you feel about this place

Part 3:

  • Is there anything special about the countryside in Vietnam?
  • What do people usually do when going to the countryside?
  • Do you think people will live in the countryside in the future?

14. Part 2: Describe a disagreement you had with someone.

You should say:

  • Who you had the disagreement with
  • What the disagreement was
  • What happened
  • And explain how you felt about it

Part 3:

  • What would you do if you disagreed with someone?
  • How do we stop an argument from escalating into a fight?
  • Who do you think should teach children to respect their teacher?
  • What disagreements do parents and children usually have?

15. Part 2: Describe a story or novel you have read that you found interesting.

You should say:

  • When you read it
  • What the story or novel was about
  • Who wrote it
  • And explain why you read it

Part 3:

  • How does technology help people tell stories?
  • Do you prefer to read e-books or paper books?
  • Why are mystery novels so popular nowadays?
  • What kinds of novels are suitable for a film adaptation?

16. Part 2: Describe an outdoor activity you did in a new place recently.

You should say:

  • What the activity is
  • Who invited you to participate in it
  • Whether you asked for help in the activity
  • And explain what change you had in the activity

Part 3:

  • What outdoor activities are popular in VietNam?
  • What are the differences between after-class activities done by middle and older
  • children?
  • Do you think it’s better for people to change jobs when there are new chances?
  • Should young people try as many new activities as possible?

17. Part 2: Describe something you had to share with others.

You should say:

  • What it was
  • Who you shared it with
  • Why you had to share it with others
  • And explain how you felt about it

Part 3:

  • Do you think kids like to share? Why?
  • How can parents teach their children to share?
  • What do you think is the benefit of sharing for children?

18. Part 2: Describe a programme that you enjoyed very much (e.g. on TV or the internet)

You should say:

  • What it was
  • How often you watched it
  • What it was about
  • And explain why it could make you laugh

Part 3:

  • Do you think adults are likely to be happier than children?
  • Is laughing beneficial to children, how about old people?
  • What kinds of things do Vietnamese people do to be happy?
  • Why do children like to laugh?

19. Part 2: Describe an object that you think is beautiful.

You should say:

  • What it is
  • Where you saw it
  • What it looks like
  • And explain why you think it is beautiful

Part 3:

  • Do you think there are more beautiful things now than in the past? Why?
  • What beautiful scenery spots are there in your country?
  • Where do you think people usually come into contact with beautiful things?
  • Why do you think people create beautiful things?

20. Part 2: Describe a photo you took that you are proud of.

You should say:

  • When you took it
  • Where you took it
  • What is in this photo
  • And explain why you are proud of it

Part 3:

  • Why do some people like to record important things with photos?
  • What can people learn from historical photographs?
  • Is taking photos the best way to remember something?
  • Which is better, taking photos or keeping a diary?

21. Part 2: Describe a time when you needed to search for information

You should say:

  • What information you needed to search for
  • When you searched for it
  • Where you searched for it
  • And explain why you needed to search for it

Part 3:

  • How can people search for information now?
  • What information can people get from television?
  • With the development of the Internet, is the library still important?
  • Does the development of the Internet have any impact on disadvantaged people?

22. Part 2: Describe a movie you watched recently and would like to watch again.

You should say:

  • When you watched it
  • Where you watched it
  • Whether you like it or not
  • And why you want to watch it again

Part 3:

  • What films are popular?
  • What kind of film do young people like to watch?
  • Do fewer people choose to watch movies in cinema than people did in the past?
  • Do you think cinemas will disappear in the future?

23. Part 2: Describe a time when you saw a lot of plastic waste (e.g. in a park, on a beach etc.).

You should say:

  • Where and when you saw the plastic waste
  • Why there was a lot of plastic waste
  • What you did after you saw them
  • And explain what your thoughts were about this

Part 3:

  • Do you think we should use plastic products?
  • How can we reduce our use of plastic?
  • What kinds of plastic waste are often seen in your country?
  • Why do people like to use plastic products?

24. Part 2: Describe a friend from childhood who you remember very well.

You should say:

  • Who he/she is
  • Where you met each other
  • What you often did together
  • And explain what made you like him/her

Part 3:

  • Do you still keep in touch with your friends from childhood? Why or why not?
  • What do you think of online social media?
  • Do you think online social media will replace face-to-face communication?
  • How important is childhood friendship to children?

25. Part 2: Describe the home of someone you know well and that you often visit.

You should say:

  • Whose home it is
  • How often you go there
  • What it is like
  • And explain how you feel about the home

Part 3:

  • What are the differences between houses or buildings in the city and in the
  • countryside?
  • Do you prefer to live in the city or in the countryside?
  • What safety risks are there in residential buildings in cities?
  • Is it expensive to decorate a house or an apartment in the place where you live?
